Fairies are prevalent in the folk lore of many different countries but most follow roughly the same path. Fairies are said to be ‘The Little People’, supernatural beings with fairy wings. The Irish fairy tale believes that fairies previously conquered society, The Tuatha De Danaan - People of the Goddess Danu. They were a mythical race who settled in Ireland before the arrival of the Milesians, the ancestors of the Gaels. The Dananns were descendants of the goddess Danu, her son Dagda was their most powerful leader. The Tuatha De Danaan were driven into hiding when the Celts invaded Ireland. The Pagan gods of the Tuatha went underground to live in tombs and mounds and, hidden from site, they grew smaller and smaller, developed fairy wings and turned into fairies.
Other cultures see fairies as the lost souls of the dead, not quite good enough to enter Heaven and not bad enough to enter Hell. They wander between the tow occasionally seen by humans. Similarly they are described as fallen angels banished from Heaven. The Welsh tradition is that fairies are thought to be a race of spiritual beings living in a world of their own and have dwindled in size over centuries originally descending from local gods.
